"A student who discovers a supernatural notebook that allows him to kill anyone begins a crusade against evil in order to rule the world as a benevolent human god. Then a deadly game of cat and mouse begins when a reclusive detective begins to track down the young man, attempting to end his reign of terror once and for all." (IMDb)“Shall we begin?” goes the tweet premiering the first trailer for the Western adaptation of a Eastern manga/anime/concept: “DEATH NOTE”!
Directed by Adam Wingard, this adaptation of Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata's “Death Note” stars Natt Wolff as “Light (Turner)” and Willem Dafoe as (Voice of) “Ryuk”.
Produced by Netflix (International) and Warner Bros. Pictures Japan (Japan), the “Death Note” feature film will premiere globally on Netflix August 25th.
And while I’ve heard of the adaptation, I’ve not read about any “blatant white-washing” or sumsuch uproar (or have I spoken too soon…?), like Ghost In The Shell has been having, or even Netflix’s Iron Fist’s “cultural appropriation”-arguments … so in the end, is it about the “property” and the “fanboys” displeasures?
For sure there have been at least 4 x Japanese feature films of “Death Note”, and this is the first “adaptation” I have read of anywhere, and I just hope to be entertained here LOL
